Vishnu Temples Celebrate Vaikunta Ekadasi:
All 108 Divya Desam observe Vaikunta Ekadashi. On Vaikunta Ekadashi, the temple’s northern gate, which is supposed to represent an entrance to ‘Vaikunta, is kept open, and Lord Vishnu is clad in diamond studded armour. The utsava idol, or festival idol, is known as ‘Namperumal,’ and it passes through the ‘Paramapada Vasal,’ or heaven’s entrance. Taking a holy dip in the ponds at Vishnu temples on Vaikunta Ekadashi and Dwadasi (the next day) is similar to taking a holy dip in all the holy rivers or tirthas of the universe.
The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple celebrates Mukkoti Ekadashi, as it is known in Telugu-speaking regions, in a similar manner. Tirumala has a unique entrance known as Vaikuntha Dvaram, which encircles the sanctum sanctorum. The dvaram (portal) is only open on Vaikuntha Ekadashi, and it is claimed that anyone who travels through this ‘Vaikunta Dwaram’ on this day achieves Vaikuntha. For Vaikuntha Ekadashi, the temple sees a large influx of pilgrims and dignitaries.
