Guru Dattatreya Jayanti legend:

According to a story, Dattatreya was the son of the wise man Atri and his wife Anasuya. Anasuya was the perfect example of a chaste and good wife. She did severe tapas (deprivations) to have a son who was as good as the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva (Trimurti). Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati, the wives of the male trinity and the goddess trinity (Tridevi), got angry. They sent their husbands to find out how good she was.

The three gods came to Anasuya dressed as ascetics (sanyasis) and asked her to give them alms while they were naked. Anasuya was confused for a while, but she quickly got back on track. She said a mantra and sprinkled water on the three beggars, turning them into babies. She then let them drink her milk while she was naked, as they asked. When Atri went back to his hermitage (ashram), Anasuya told him what had happened, even though he already knew about it because of his psychic powers. He put his arms around the three babies and held them close to his heart.

This turned them into one baby with three heads and six arms. Since the three gods didn’t come back, their wives were worried and ran to Anasuya. The goddesses asked her to forgive them and bring their husbands back. Anasuya agreed to what they asked. Then, the Trimurti showed up in their real form in front of Atri and Anasuya and gave them a son named Dattatreya.

Even though Dattatreya is seen as a form of all three gods, he is especially seen as an avatar of Vishnu. His brothers Chandra and Durvasa, on the other hand, are seen as forms of Brahma and Shiva, respectively.
