There is a folklore connected to the history of Thiruvenkadu. Maruthuvan, a demonic being, was granted boons by Brahma before torturing divine beings. If the Devas wanted to escape the monster, they had to go to Shiva. In order to avoid detection, the Lord suggested the Devas go to Thiruvengadu. To aid him in his battle, Shiva sent his chariot Nandhi and ultimately slew the monster. Using his trident, the demon wounded Nandhi. As Lord Shiva became angry, he took on the shape of Agoramurthy. When the devil saw the Lord, he immediately bowed at his feet and pleaded for forgiveness. He hoped, too, that the people who worship Agoramurthy would never be threatened by anybody.

When Achuthagapanar prayed to and worshipped Thiruvengadar in the three tanks, the god granted him a kid. This little boy eventually took control of the Santhana Kuravars and was known as Meikandar. A brahmin named Vedarasi hid his rations in the tree’s hollow. A snake in the cleft threw poison at the meal. Vedarasi unwittingly fed a Vedic priest the poisoned meal, and the priest later perished. As a result of his devotion to Lord Siva of Thiruvengadu, this brahmin was freed from the Brahmahathi Dhosham.
