Hindus prepare Ugadi Pacchadi as a symbolic delicacy for this occasion. The festive dish known as “pacchadi” serves as a symbolic reminder to the public that the coming year, as well as all of life, will be filled with a variety of tastes, including salty, sour, sweet, and bitter sensations. One is reminded that no event or occurrence is entirely good or evil, just as the many components are connected together. There are sweet moments even amidst painful circumstances. The sense of taste serves as a reminder that life, like all experiences, is ephemeral and temporary, and that one must learn to put both pain and pleasure in their correct temporal context.
