History Of Kalahasti Rahu Ketu Surya Grahana Pooja

According to a number of different Hindu texts, the temple is connected to the legend of three people who devoted their lives to worshipping Lord Shiva. The name Sri Kalahari itself is formed from the names of all three devotees; the word “Sri” comes from the word for spider, “kala” comes from the word for snake, and “Hasti” comes from the word for elephant.

It is thought that all three of them were devoted followers of Lord Shiva and that each of them performed pooja in their own unique style in front of the deity. At the time when the elephant was making the ritual offering of Abhishek to Lord Linga with water that he used to carry from the adjacent river, the spider would wrap the sturdy thread around the linga in order to keep it from being damaged.

On the other side, the Serpent used to embellish the lingam by placing Naga Manikyam, his most cherished stone, in close proximity to the lingam. Once, while all three of them were attempting to perform the pooja in their own unique manner, they accidentally crossed each other’s paths. The elephant believed that the method of worshipping utilized by the spider was impolite, and as a result, he splattered the thread that the spider had woven with his trunk full of water.

As a result of the behavior of the elephant, both the snake and the spider were enraged. In order to exact its vengeance, the serpent made its way inside the trunk of the elephant and spread its poison. While the anger persisted, the elephant continued to lash out, and eventually, it smashed its trunk into the lingam, which resulted in the death of the snake. In the midst of the battle, the spider too met its end.

In the end, the elephant passes away due to the impact that the poison had on its whole body. When Lord Shiva saw the sacrifices made by his worshippers, he was overjoyed and he bestowed redemption on the elephant and the snake, while the spider was reborn to serve the holy purpose in the role of King.
