Where does the name of the Srikalahasti Temple comes from:
The name Srikalahasti is made up of three words. “Sri” means “spider,” “Kala” means “snake,” and “Hasti” means “elephant.” Spiders, snakes, and elephants are thought to have come here to worship Lord Shiva and find salvation. It is on the banks of the River Swarnamukhi, which flows into one of South India’s biggest rivers, the River Pennar. Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Linga Purana, which are all very old books, all talk about the ancient Shiva temple of Srikalahasti. Skanda Purana says that Arjuna worshipped Kalahasteeswara here (Lord Shiva). He met Rishi Bharadwaja at the top of a hill.
Brief history of the Srikalahasti Temple:
The temple of Kalahasteeswara is one of the most beautiful places in India that is dedicated to Siva. A huge, old gopuram that is 120 feet tall stands over the main gate of this temple. The whole temple is carved into a big stone hill. Pallava kings built the first part of this temple in the 5th century. Chola kings fixed up the temple and built the main building in the 10th century. The outside walls and four towers were built when Sri Veera Narasimharayar was king of the Vijayanagara kingdom. In 1516, the main gopuram and the 100-pillar mandapam were built by Krishna Devaraya, the great king of Vijayanagara.
