According to the Skanda Purana, Rishikesh was formerly a part of the fabled “Kedarkhand.” Supposedly, Lord Rama came here to atone for murdering Ravana, the asura ruler of Lanka. Rama’s younger brother Lakshmana used two jute ropes to make the crossing of the Ganges at the location of the current Lakshman Jhula suspension bridge. In 1924, floodwaters destroyed the iron-rope suspension bridge that had been in use since 1889. In 1927, the United Provinces Public Works Department constructed a new, more sturdy bridge to link Tapovan in Tehri with Jonk in Pauri Garhwal. Ram Jhula, a famous suspension bridge, was constructed in adjacent Sivananda Nagar in 1986. Skanda Purana also refers to this location, calling it “Indrakund,” as the spot where Indra took a ritual bath to wash away a curse.

Beautifully located on the right bank of the Ganges, on a high cliff overlooking the river,” is how Indian Civil Service officer HG Walton describes the location in his book The Gazeteer of Dehradun. The realignment of the pilgrim route from Raiwala to Rishikesh and the subsequent building of a new bridge over the Song river have spurred tremendous growth in the area.

Haridwar Rishikesh Badrinath Kedarnath Tour Package and Details:

Adi Shankara, a great Indian philosopher, re-established Badrinath as an important pilgrimage place in the eighth century. Visitors visiting the Badrinath temple used to cover a lot of ground on foot back in the day.

Earthquakes and avalanches have been responsible for the temple’s destruction on several occasions. Despite having just twenty or so houses for the temple’s personnel as late as the First World War, the site attracted thousands of visitors every year and as many as fifty thousand during its bicentennial ceremonies (every twelve years). The number of tourists has climbed dramatically from 1961, when just 90,676 people visited, to an estimated 600,000 in 2006. Vaishnavites also consider the Badrinath temple to be a holy pilgrimage location. Numerous climbing trips leave from Badrinath for nearby peaks including Nilkantha.
