Navaratri is a biannual Hindu event celebrated in honour of Mother Goddess Durga. It takes place over nine nights (and ten days) in the months of Chaitra (March/April on the Gregorian calendar) and Sharada. It is observed and celebrated differently in different regions of the Hindu-Indian cultural world. In theory, there are four seasons of Navaratri. In practice, however, it is the post-monsoon October celebration known as Sharada Navaratri. The celebration is held during the bright half of the Hindu calendar month Ashvin, which corresponds to September and October in the Gregorian calendar. It coincides with the Festival of the Nine Emperor Gods.
The most important puja that Hindu households do with great religious passion and excitement is Navratri. Navratri puja, which translates as “Nine Nights,” has two versions: Sharada Navratri, which occurs between September and October, and Chaitra Navratri, which occurs between March and April.

- Offer some interesting meals that you cooked especially for the puja.
- Perform arati to Maa Durga. Perform this pooja on each of the nine days of Navratri.

- The tenth day is Visarjan.
- Following the nine days of Navratri puja, Visarjan, or farewell to Ma Durga, is performed on the tenth day. Perform the customary puja as you did over the nine days of Navratri.
- Sprinkle Kalash water in all rooms of the home after the puja. Feed the birds the rice you kept on the Kalash lid. The barley seeds would have developed rapidly during the course of ten days.
