According to the legends, a demon by the name of Gayasura who was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu underwent severe penance. Lord Vishnu made his appearance in front of him and fulfilled his request that everybody who sees him would be saved from their sins. By the use of his spiritual abilities, Gayasura began expanding his body with the purpose of bringing salvation to every person on Earth.

Indra, the god of heaven, was concerned that there would be an imbalance in the universe if everyone were to achieve salvation, so he pleaded to the gods of the lords, Vishnu, Siva, and Brahma, asking them to find a solution. Lord Vishnu, Lord Siva, and Lord Brahma all took on the appearance of Brahmins and approached Gayasura to ask for room for the Yajna.

They explained to Gayasura that there have been several terrible occurrences on Earth, which is why they want to conduct Yajna on top of Gayasura’s corpse since it is sacred. Brahmins also informed him that this Yajna would go for seven days and that he should be strong enough to withstand the torture because if the criteria were not satisfied, then he would be put to death. Gayasura complied with their request and went to sleep by laying down on the surface of the earth with his head in Siro Gaya (which is also known as Gaya in Bihar), his navel in Jajapur (which is also known as Nabi Gaya in Orissa), and his foot in Pithapuram (Padagaya in East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh). As Gayasura began to count the days, he based it on the sound of the rooster crowing in the early hours of the morning. On the final day of the Yajna, Shiva transformed himself into a rooster and croaked at midnight. Gayasura awoke without realising the ploy, which caused the Yajna to be disrupted. Gayasura was confronted by Brahmins who accused him of breaking his word and who questioned his ability to atone for the sins of the whole human race if he was unable to withstand the anguish of the Yajna for a period of seven days. The irate Brahmins were prepared to execute him, and Gayasura was prepared to make the sacrifice he had vowed. The Lords appeared before him in their true form, and he was given the request that the spot where he lay down would one day become a sacred temple, with the Head section serving as the holy abode of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma at the Navel section, and Lord Siva at the feet. He also bestowed the blessing that if they execute Pindapradana, their ancestors would be credited and they will achieve salvation.Sage Vyasa, the Pandavas, and Kunti are said to have travelled to this sacred place during the Dwapara Yuga, according to the Skanda Purana. Rama visited during Tretayuga. Lord Vishnu, Brahma and Indra during Kruta Yuga.
