History of the Maddur Mahishasura Mardhini Temple:
The idol, Swayambu Amman, was discovered in 1960 at a place named Sakthi Medu next to the railroad tracks. When this goddess appeared as Swayambu to a group of workmen in 1954 as they built the railroad between Chennai and Tirupathi, they were so taken by her beauty that they erected a tiny temple in her honour there that eventually grew into the magnificent structure it is today.

Annadhanam will serve 100 worshippers every day at 12:15 PM. Devotees are encouraged to take part in this Annadhanam scheme and get Amman’s blessings; the cost for one day of Annadhanam is Rs. 2000. One day of Annadhanam for 100 persons will be funded by a permanent donation of Rs. 25000 plus interest.

The Tirupati hills provide a picturesque backdrop for the main temple’s spacious corridor, which is lined with colourful pillars. Mahishasura Mardhini, the primary god, stands roughly 10 feet tall. The Goddess is so captivating that, unusually, even as she kills the demon Mahishasura with her soolam at her feet, she smiles. She is Ashtabuja, with eight hands, four on each side, each wielding a weapon.
She is also decked out in a skull garland. The idol was erected beneath a straightforward roof construction. At the temple’s entrance are shrines dedicated to Lord Vinayaga and Om Shakthi. The Vriksham temple tree, a neem tree, is another distinctive feature of this place. Its leaves don’t have a bitter flavour.
