The Chamundeshwari Temple is a Hindu temple that can be found in the Indian state of Karnataka. It can be found on the summit of the Chamundi Hills around 13 kilometres away from the palace city of Mysuru. The tutelary deity Chamundeshwari, also known as the furious form of Shakti, was venerated for generations by the Maharaja of Mysuru and was honoured with the naming of the temple after her.

It is called Krouncha Pitha because, during the time of the Puranas, the surrounding region was known as Krouncha Puri. It is said that one of Sati’s hairs landed at this location.

People in the state of Karnataka refer to Chamundeshwari as Naada Devi, which literally translates as “state Goddess.” It is located at an elevation that is approximately 3300 feet above the level of the mean sea. One of the oldest temples in all of Mysore is this one, which has been around for quite some time. Story behind Mysore Chamundi Temple:

Mahishasura, the demon lord of Mysore, was a beast with a buffalo head. This location was named after Mahishuru, the city of the demon Mahisha. When the gods and goddesses implored Goddess Parvathi, who was married to Lord Siva, to protect them from the monster, she destroyed it. After destroying the monster, the Goddess relocated to the summit of the Chamundi Hills, where she is honoured and worshipped. Another moniker for her is Mahishasura Mardini, which translates to “She who killed Mahishasura.”

On the peak of this hill, which was governed by Mahishasura, it is said that the goddess Durga defeated and killed the demon king Mahishasura. The locals eventually gave the area the name Mahishooru (Place of Mahisha). It was formerly known as Mysore, but the name was anglicised to Mysuru by the British.

The holy darshan of Lord Shiva can be obtained at the Chamundeshwari Temple, which is why hundreds of worshippers travel there each year. On Fridays and during festival seasons, there will be a significant influx of worshipers. Navaratri and Mysuru Dushera are the two festivals that hold the most significance for the Chamundeshwari Temple’s annual celebrations.
