Bannerghatta National Park (BNP), which was established in 1974, originally housed a modest zoo and picnic area, which later evolved into Bannerghatta Biological Park. In 2002, the National Park and the Biological Park were separated from one another to form their own separate entities.
The Bannerghatta Biological Park encompasses a total area of 731.88 hectares and features a zoo, safari park, butterfly park, and rescue center among its many attractions. Agencies that are working together on this project include the Zoo Authority of Karnataka, the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore, and the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE), also located in Bangalore. The Governing Council of the Zoo Authority of Karnataka made the decision to rename Bannerghatta Biological Park as “Bengaluru Bannerghatta Biological Park” in order to make it easier for members of the general public to find their way there (BBBP).

The Bannerghatta Biological Park may be found in the Bangalore Urban District, specifically inside the boundaries of the Anekal Revenue Taluk. The park is located approximately 25 kilometers away from Vidhana Soudha and approximately 20 kilometers to the northwest of Anekal town.

A picnic area was established in the Bannerghatta forest in 1971 by Shri Y.M.L Sharma, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests for the Karnataka Forest Department and founder of Bannerghatta National Park. Shri Y.M.L Sharma is also credited with the establishment of Bannerghatta National Park. In 1974, the area that is now the Bannerghatta National Park was formally designated as a national park for the purpose of protecting its native flora and animals.
The idea for creating a miniature zoo and a nature park by removing a small portion of the tourism zone within the national park came about as a response to the requests made by visiting tourists for the provision of facilities for recreational and wildlife tourism. In order to fulfill these requests, it was decided to carve out a portion of the tourism zone inside the national park.

Zoo At Park Bannerghatta National
In the year 1971, the Forest Department of the State Government of Karnataka took possession of the Bannerghatta Zoo and turned it into a picnic park. The zoo sits on a land area of 16.00 hectares. Within the Bannerghatta Sandal Reserve, the zoo is located in a valley between two hills known as Champakadhama and Mirza. In captivity, there is an exhibition of a variety of mammalian, reptilian, and avian species, some of which are native to India and some of which originate outside. There are a total of 1941 creatures, which are classified into 94 different species.
The most well-known and fascinating of them are the Thamin deer, the Hog deer, the King Cobra, the Crocodiles, the Himalayan black bear, the Panthers, and the different Birds. In addition, there is both a Museum and an Auditorium here for the guests’ educational needs. The existing zoo grounds are 12 ha, but there are plans to add another 28 ha to the property. In the expansion area, there will be a total of eight new enclosures built.
