Srikalahasti Temple – Origin of its name:

Srikalahasti’s name comes from three words: “Sri,” which means “spider,” “Kala,” which means “snake,” and “Hasti,” which means “elephant.” It is thought that spiders, snakes, and elephants came here to worship Lord Shiva and find salvation. It is on the banks of the River Swarnamukhi, which flows into the River Pennar, one of South India’s biggest rivers. The three ancient epics Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Linga Purana all talk about the ancient Shiva temple of Srikalahasti. Skanda Purana says that Arjuna came to this place to worship Kalahasteeswara (Lord Shiva). On the top of a hill, he met Rishi Bharadwaja.

Srikalahasti Temple brief history:

One of the most beautiful Siva temples in India is the temple of Kalahasteeswara. Over the main gate of this temple is a huge, old gopuram that is 120 feet high. All of the temple is cut into the side of a big stone hill. The first part of this temple was built in the 5th century by Pallava kings. In the 10th century, Chola kings fixed up the temple and built the main building. During the time of Sri Veera Narasimharayar of the Vijayanagara kingdom, the outside walls and four towers were built. Krishna Devaraya, the great king of Vijayanagara, built the main gopuram and the 100-pillar mandapam in 1516.

Sri Kalahasti is thought to be one of Lord Shiva’s five holy places, along with Tiruvannamalai, Thiruvanaikaval, Chidambaram, and Kanchipuram. The place is a symbol of Vayu Sthalam, which means “the element of air.” Rahu and Ketu, two of the nine celestial bodies in Indian astrology, are also connected to this temple. People who have the planet Rahu in a bad place in their horoscopes believe that going to this temple will help them feel better.

Fall of Srikalahasti Temple Dwajarohanam:

The 136-foot-tall Rajagopuram temple fell down in 2010. No people were hurt, but about 100 monkeys who lived on the temple grounds were killed. In the 16th century, Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire built the building to honour his victory over the Gajapatis. Make sure to try the prasadam at the shrine. The pulihore and laddoos are especially good. At noon, the temple also gives away free lunch.
