History of Kanipakam Lord Vigneshwara:

Kanipakam Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Temple has been around since the 11th century, but what is its background? According to legend, Chola king Kulothunga Chola constructed the temple in the 11th century. During the 13th-century Vijayanagara Kingdom, the ancient temple underwent extensive renovations and expansion. It was constructed on the banks of the legendary River Bahuda. Two brothers named Sankha and Likhita were supposedly on their way to Kanipakam to pray for divine favor.

But the younger brother Likhita, unable to tolerate his hunger, took a mango from the mango orchard and, against his older brother’s advice, ate the fruit while they were on the road. After seeing this, the eldest sibling went to the King and demanded that his brother be punished appropriately for his transgression.

As a result of his punishment, Likhita was deprived of the use of both his hands. The younger brother’s arms returned to him when he and his older brother started their trip and moved ahead to take a swim in the river near Kanipakam. Human arm (Bahuda) is the meaning given to the river after this event.

Festivals that take place at Kanipakam Temple include:

  • The festival of Brahmostavam lasts for twenty-one days.

Deepotsavam at Kanipakam:

  • The floating of lanterns in the Kalyani is an integral part of the Deepotsava festival. It’s a big celebration, and the temple looks amazing beneath the twinkling lights of hundreds of floating lamps.
