You may find this temple on the Yamuna River, not far from the 2010 Commonwealth Games’ host community. About 1968, Yogiji Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS, had the concept for a temple complex. His successor, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, began the Akshardham complex’s development in 1982.

In 2000, both the Delhi Development Authority and the government of Uttar Pradesh offered plots of land for the development, totaling 30 and 60 acres, respectively. Construction on the temple complex began in November of 2000 and was finished some five years later. The grand opening ceremony took place in November 2005. Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and current Opposition Leader L.K. Advani both showed up for the opening ceremony.
