You may find this temple on the Yamuna River, not far from the 2010 Commonwealth Games’ host community. About 1968, Yogiji Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS, had the concept for a temple complex. His successor, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, began the Akshardham complex’s development in 1982.
In 2000, both the Delhi Development Authority and the government of Uttar Pradesh offered plots of land for the development, totaling 30 and 60 acres, respectively. Construction on the temple complex began in November of 2000 and was finished some five years later. The grand opening ceremony took place in November 2005. Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and current Opposition Leader L.K. Advani both showed up for the opening ceremony.
Furthermore, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized Akshardham Delhi as the biggest Hindu Temple in its entirety.
This Yagna kund-style setting for the Sahaj Anan Water and Light Show is authentic in every detail. Lasers and fountains work together in this Water and Light display to illustrate a spiritual message from the Kena Upanishad. The 27-foot-tall metal statue of Bhagwan Swaminarayan in his adolescent yogi form stands next to the Kund (Neelkanth Varni). There are 108 tiny shrines scattered across the kund’s 2,870 stairs. The kund is 300 feet by 300 feet.
