  1. On Shivaratri, people should get up early and take a bath. People say that you should put black sesame seeds in the water. People believe that taking a holy bath on Shivaratri cleans both the body and the soul. If you can, it’s best to bathe in the Ganges.
  2. After taking a bath, devotees should take Sankalp, which is a promise to fast for the whole day and break the fast the next day. During Sankalp, devotees promise to make their own decisions while fasting and ask Lord Shiva for his blessing so they can finish the fast without being stopped. Hindu fasts are strict, and people make promises for self-determination and pray to God to help them finish them.
  3. During the fast, devotees should not eat or drink anything. In the most strict form of fasting, you can’t even drink water. During the day, though, you should eat fruits and drink milk. At night, you should fast very strictly. In other words, fruits and milk can be eaten during the day.
  4. Before going to Shiva Puja or the temple in the evening, devotees should take a second bath. If someone can’t go to the temple, they can make a makeshift Shiva Ling to do Puja activities. One can even make a Linga out of the mud and put Ghee on it to do Abhishek Puja at home.
  5. Shiva Puja is meant to be done at night. You can do Shivaratri Puja once or four times during the night. The length of the whole night can be split into four parts to get four Prahar, which are needed to do Shiva Puja four times. If someone wants to do a single Puja, they should do it at midnight. Please look at Maha Shivaratri Puja Timings to find out when the four Prahars are happening in your city.
  6. Puja Vidhi says that different things should be used for Abhishek of Shiva Lingam. For Abhishek, people usually use milk, rose water, sandalwood paste, yoghurt, honey, Ghee, sugar, and water. People who do four Prahar Puja must do water Abhishek during the first Prahar, curd Abhishek during the second Prahar, Ghee Abhishek during the third Prahar, and honey Abhishek during the fourth Prahar.
  7. After the Abhishek ritual, a Bilva leaf garland is put around Shiva Linga. People think that Lord Shiva can cool down with Bilva leaves.
  8. After that, Chandan or Kumkum is put on the Shiva Linga, and then a lamp and Dhupa are lit. Other things used to decorate Lord Shiva are the flower of Madar, which is also called “Aak,” and “Vibhuti,” which is also called “Bhasm.” Vibhuti is holy ash made from cow dung that has been dried.
  9. The mantra to chant during Puja duration is Om Namah Shivaya.
  10. After taking a bath the next day, people should break their fast. To get the most out of the Vrat, people should break their fast between sunrise and the end of Chaturdashi Tithi.
