Pearland, Brazoria County, Texas is home to Sri Meenakshi Temple (also known as the Sri Meenakshi Devasthanam), a Hindu temple in the greater Houston region.
The goddess Meenakshi Devi, a form of Parvati, presides over the temple with her husband, the Shiva form Sundareswarar. The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, is dedicated to Meenakshi Devi. Only in Pearland, Texas is there a temple devoted to Meenakshi Devi.

It is the third-oldest Hindu temple in the United States and was built in 1982 to a design by Indian architect S. M. Ganapathy Sthapathi in the South Indian Dravidian style of Hindu temple construction. Meenakshi Devi, Sundareswarar, Venkateshwara (a manifestation of Vishnu), and Lakshmi are worshipped in the temple’s main shrine.
Ganesha, Rama, Ayappa, Durga, Nandi, and Garuda all have sanctuaries inside the temple complex. There is a shrine in each of the four corners of the temple in addition to the main one. The poet-saints and Vedanta philosophy gurus of the Tamil tradition, Alwar and Nayanar, are also depicted in sculptures found at the temple (Adi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, and Madhvacharya).

Hindu worshippers and curious sightseers from all around the Houston region make their way to Sri Meenakshi Temple. In addition to being a popular tourist destination in Pearland, it is also one of the most recognizable religious monuments in the Greater Houston area.
In 1977, people came together to form the Sri Meenakshi Temple Society. A 5-acre plot was purchased for the temple between 1976 and 1978. University of Houston architecture professor Ranjit Banerjee designed the space. The first permanent building on the temple grounds was dedicated to the Hindu god Ganesha.
The temple’s main shrine, built according to plans by Indian architect S. M. Ganapathy Sthapathi, had its first Mahakumbhabhishekam (inauguration ceremony) in 1982, making it the third-oldest Hindu temple in the United States. Parveen Sultana, M. Balamuralikrishna, Seerkazhi Govindarajan, and M. S. Subbulakshmi were just a few of the well-known Indian classical musicians that performed at the temple’s fundraising events.
The raja gopuram and the corner temples weren’t finished until 1995, but the temple kept growing in the years after that. Typical of Hindu temples in South India, Sri Meenakshi Temple was built in the Dravidian style.
