History Of Penchalakona Temple Narasimha Swamy
The Avatar of Vishnu traditionally ranked 4th out of the 10 primary avatars. Lord Vishnu adopted the Narasimha avatar to destroy Hiranyakasipa. To appease Narasimha Swamy’s wrath, the goddess Sridevi assumed the persona of Chenchu Lakshmi, the daughter of the ruler of the tribe that lived in that area. After marrying Chenchu Lakshmi, Lord became a member of the tribe and was given the title of Son in Law.
So, the importance of the Chenchu tribes is enhanced by their presence in this shrine. Lord appears like he’s cuddling Chechu Lakshmi (penavasukovatam), hence he’s named Penusila Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. As time passes, people begin to refer to it as Penchula Narasimha.
The image of the Lord is one that manifests himself (SWAYAMBHU). The Lion’s Head was topped by two boulders that were twisted together. Because of this, the name “PENUSILA LAKSHMI NARASIMHA SWAMY” is given to the Lord. “PENU” is the Telugu word for “twist,” and “SILA” is the word for “stone.”
Story Of The Penchalakona Temple:
Gollaboyadu would bring his cattle from Gonupalli and graze them on a regular basis at the Kona. Gollaboyadu would go there every day. Boyadu saw an elderly person one day who informed him that Penusila Lakshmi Narasimha Swami was the one who established him in Kona. He instructed boyadu to report this miracle in person to the village chief as soon as he arrived at the village head.
Also, he urged the peasants to take their cues from boyadu. Nevertheless, as he began to feel the squeeze of inclination, he turned around to look at the elderly man. The transformation of the elderly man into a boulder left him in a state of astonishment. When some time passed, the leader of the community had a dream about the incident and came to the conclusion that the miracle was real.
After that, the leader of the community constructed a temple, and he entrusted the Archakas with the responsibility of regularly offering worship, or Pooja, to the deity. Five days of festivities honoring Sri Penusila Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, also known as the Penchala Swamy festival, are held annually beginning on Vysakha Suddha Dwadasi and concluding on Bahula Padyami. The faithful are honoring their commitments by presenting the Deity with their hair as an offering. This event dates back centuries and is only celebrated in the immediate vicinity of Cuddapah and Nellore.
