According to the legends, when the Pandavas were banished from the kingdom during the Dwaparayuga, they prayed to Lord Krishna for guidance and assistance throughout their time spent in Vanavasam. Idols of Sita, Rama, and Lakshmana were presented to the Pandavas by Krishna, and they were instructed to worship the respective deities.Pandavas used to worship these idols in accordance with the Lord’s instructions. While the Pandavas were travelling to a new location, they requested that Vaikhasana Preist Vedagarbha worship these statues on their behalf. In the past, Vedagarbha and his kin would routinely offer Abhishekam and Archana to these gods and goddesses.
During the historical period of Buddhism, the Vaikhasana priests excavated a trench and covered it with mud. This was done to prevent the idols from being destroyed. King Poosapati Sita Ramachandra of the Gajapati dynasty established Kumbilampuram (present-day Kumili Village) as the capital city in the 16th century A.D., and he began to rule over this area at that time. The residents of the village used to make their living by collecting wood from the adjacent forest.
One day, when the villagers were gathering wood, a thunderstorm rolled in, and the rain became increasingly heavy. As a result, the peasants sought cover among the trees. A senile, mute woman who was devoted to Lord Rama sought refuge in the shade of a banyan tree. Lord Rama manifested himself in front of her and bestowed upon her the gift of speech by inscribing the alphabet on her tongue as a blessing. Lord Rama appeared before her, gave her instructions to retrieve Dwaparayuga Idols from the adjacent pond, and then vanished. The Lord directed the elderly lady to deliver the message to the King, and she did so in some way.
King used this staff to retrieve the idols from the pond after they had been submerged. On the day of Bhishma Ekadasi, the King and his priests constructed the temple atop Swetachalam hill and put the idols in place there. This temple was summoned by Ramatheertham as the Idols emerged from the water where they had been submerged.
