History

This sacred town’s past is intricately entwined with the history of its most well-known temple, which is known as the Srikalahasti temple. The temple was first constructed during the Pallava era, but later on, it was renovated upon by the Chola monarchs.

At about the same time, Sri Krishnadevaraya, monarch of the Vijayanagara empire, constructed the magnificent gopuram that stands more than 36.6 meters (nearly 120 feet) tall at the entrance to the temple. It is said that Sri, which means spider, Kala, which means snake, and hasti, which means elephant, all worshipped Lord Shiva and achieved moksha or nirvana at this location, thus the origin of the town’s name, which is derived from these three creatures.

Legends of Srikalahasti Temple

According to the most well-known version of the myth, Lord Vayu appeased Karpoora Lingam by meditating and fasting for an untold number of years when the world was still in its infancy. This occurred during the period of time when the earth was first taking shape. Lord Shiva was so pleased with Lord Vayu’s devotion that he bestowed three blessings upon him.

Thus, Lord Vayu made the request that he be granted a global presence, that he be made an important component of every living thing on the earth, and that he be granted permission to rename the Karpoora Ligam as the Samba Siva. These three demands were fulfilled by Lord Shiva, and ever since that time, Vayu (also known as Pran Vayu or air) has been an essential component of life on earth. The lingam was worshipped as Samba Siva, also known as the Karpoora Vayu Lingam.

According to a different version of the narrative, the celestial avatar of the goddess Parvati was forced to give up her status by Lord Shiva, who then forced her to assume the shape of a common person instead. In order to free herself from the yoke of the curse, the Goddess Parvati fasted and meditated in Srikalahasti for a number of years.

Gnana Prasunambika Devi is also referred to as Shiva-Gnanam Gnana Prasunamba. Lord Shiva was very delighted with her devotion and commitment, and as a result, he transformed Parvati into a celestial incarnation known as Gnana Prasunambika Devi.

Kannappa is said to have been one of the 63 Saivite Saints who dedicated their whole lives to worshipping Lord Shiva, according to different mythology. Kannappa had the altruistic desire to give up his eyes in order to stop the flow of blood emanating from Lord Shiva’s lingam. When Lord Shiva found out about this, he put a halt to the holy man and freed him from the never-ending cycle of life and death.

Some people believe that a curse was placed on Ghanakala that caused him to assume the shape of a ghostly spirit. Throughout those fifteen years, he prayed to Srikalahasti and recited the Bhairava Mantra in an effort to gain Lord Shiva’s favor. Ghanakala’s appearance was changed back to the one she had before Lord Shiva, who was satisfied with her devotion.
