Brief history of the Srikalahasti Temple:
The temple of Kalahasteeswara is one of the most beautiful places in India that is dedicated to Siva. A huge, old gopuram that is 120 feet tall stands over the main gate of this temple. The whole temple is carved into a big stone hill. Pallava kings built the first part of this temple in the 5th century. Chola kings fixed up the temple and built the main building in the 10th century. The outside walls and four towers were built when Sri Veera Narasimharayar was king of the Vijayanagara kingdom. In 1516, the main gopuram and the 100-pillar mandapam were built by Krishna Devaraya, the great king of Vijayanagara.

Srikalahasti gets its name from three words: “Sri,” which means “spider,” “Kala,” which means “snake,” and “Hasti,” which means “elephant,” because it is said that spiders, snakes, and elephants came here to worship Lord Shiva and find salvation. It is on the banks of the River Swarnamukhi, which flows into the River Pennar, a major river in South India. The old Shiva temple at Srikalahasti is talked about in the Skanda Purana, the Shiva Purana, and the Linga Purana. The Skanda Purana says that Arjuna came here to worship Kalahasteeswara (Lord Shiva). On a hilltop, he met Rishi Bharadwaja.
This small town is full of both small and big temples. Most of them were built when Pallava, Chola, and Vijayanagara kings were in power. Srikalahasti is linked to Bhakta Kannappa, who was one of Lord Shiva’s most devoted followers and gave the Lord his eyes. In February and March, people go all out for the Maha Shivaratri festival.
