  • Lord Surya is honored on the Saptami Tithi. Being the seventh day of the lunar month of the Magha calendar, Shukla Paksha Saptami is also known as Ratha Saptami or Magha Saptami. On the day known as Ratha Saptami, the birth of God Surya is celebrated.
  • It is said on this day that Lord Surya Dev first began to illuminate the whole universe. So this day is also known as Surya Jayanti.
  • Ratha Saptami is a very fortunate day, almost as fortunate as Surya Grahan for Dan-Punya rituals. One may purge themselves of any and all sins by fasting and worshipping Lord Surya on this day.
  • Worshipping Lord Surya on this day is said to cleanse one of the seven deadly sins committed either consciously or unconsciously, with one’s words, one’s body, and one’s thinking, either in this or a past life.
  • During celebrating Ratha Saptami, it is customary to take a bath during Arunodaya. One of the most significant ceremonies, Ratha Saptami Snan, is recommended only on Arunodaya.

  • A river or canal, rather than a bathtub at home, is the preferable setting for a relaxing soak. Most cities throughout the world have their Arunodaya period and dawn time posted on DrikPanchang.com.
  • After having a bath one should worship Lord Surya at dawn by presenting Arghyadan to Him. During Arghyadan, worshippers carefully pour water from a tiny Kalash onto the folded hands of the Namaskar Mudra while they face the Sun.
  • Following this, one should worship the Sun God with Kapoor, Dhup, and red flowers by lighting a Deepak made of pure Ghee.
  • Snan, Dan-Punya, and Arghyadan performed in the morning to Suryadev providing long life, good health, and wealth to those who do them.
