Srivilliputhur Andal Temple is a historic Hindu temple located in Srivilliputhur in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, 80 km from Madurai and 100 km from Tirunelveli. This is one of Tamil Nadu’s most well-known temples and one of Lord Vishnu’s 108 Divya desams. The 11-tier Raja gopuram, which is the highest structure in Tamil Nadu, also serves as the state’s emblem.
Lord Vishnu, also known as Vatapatrasayi, and his consort Lakshmi, also known as Andal, are the subjects of the temple. It is said that two of the Alwars, namely Periazhwar and his foster daughter Andal, were born there. The temple has been around since before the time of the Alwars, in the eighth century. King Villi, who governed the area, built the Vatapatra Sayanar Temple. Peria Alwar built the lofty temple tower with assistance from Pandian monarch Vallabadevan (765-815 AD). Different Pandya dynasty monarchs built the Andal Shrine at various points in time. King Thirumalai Nayak carried out a lot of remodelling.

The Srivilliputhur Temple is connected to the story of Andal, who was discovered by Periazhwar in the temple’s garden behind a Tulsi plant. Before giving the garland to the temple’s presiding goddess, it is thought that she wore it. When Periazhwar discovered it later, he was furious and decided to halt the practise. It is said that Vishnu ordered him to donate the garland that Andal wore every day to him in his dream. This custom is still practised today. It’s also said that Andal, who eventually united with Ranganatha of Srirangam, was married.
There are two sections to the temple. The second section is known as Andal Shrine, while the first part is known as Vatapatra Sayanar Temple. The temple is surrounded by a granite wall that covers all of its shrines, the garden where Andal was discovered, and two of its three water features. The Rajagopuram, which has eleven storeys and rises to a height of 192 feet, is the temple’s main draw. One of Tamilnadu’s highest temple towers is this one. It serves as the Tamil Nadu government’s emblem as well.

It is thought that Perialwar, also known as Vishnuchittra, lived in the eighth century. His adoptive kid, Andal, discovered her while overseeing Tulasi’s horticulture inside the Sri Vatapatrasai Temple grounds. Every day, Andal used to assist her father Perialwar in making flower garlands for the Lord’s devotion.
Perialwar observed Andal enjoying herself in a mirror while wearing a garland around her neck that was intended for the Lord one morning. Perialwar expressed her displeasure and rebuked her for her actions. In Perialwar’s dreams, the Lord made an appearance and declared that he would don the wreath that Godai had on.
As Andal grew older, she indicated desire in being married to Krishna. In a dream, Lord Ranganatha asked Perialwar to bring Andal to Sri Rangam for a wedding ceremony. The Lord told the leader of the Sri Rangam Temple in his dreams to send a palanquin that was appropriately decorated. For the wedding ceremony, Sri Rangam sent a palanquin. King Vallaba Deva organised the magnificent wedding and participated in the celebration.
Andal went inside the temple’s sanctum sanctorum to pay respects to Sri Ranganatha’s holy feet. She joined with the Lord, much to the surprise of the devotees assembled to see the ritual. This temple was allegedly constructed in the fourteenth century. The 60 mt tall Temple tower has impressive characteristics. The gifts to the temple from King Tirumalai Nayak, the Chola Kings, and the Travancore Kings were enormous.
