History had forgotten how or when the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple came to be. No reputable historical records or other sources provide enough information to pinpoint when and by whom the first idol of Sree Padmanabhaswamy was dedicated. Both the epics and the Puranas mention the Temple.

As recorded in Srimad Bhagavatha, Balarama paid a visit to this temple, took a dip in Padmatheertham, and offered a number of sacrifices while he was there. The 9th-century poet Nammalwar, who is also one of the 12 Vaishnavite saints of the Alvar lineage, wrote 10 songs praising Lord Padmanabha.

Several prominent academics and authors, including the late Dr. L.A.Ravi Varma of Travancore, have suggested that the beginning of the Kali Yuga saw the construction of this temple (which was over 5000 years ago). The Temple’s lore has been passed down through the generations. An ancient grantha titled “Ananthasayana Mahatmya” and the temple’s own palm leaf records include the tradition that a Tulu Brahmin hermit called Divakara Muni performed the temple’s consecration. To mark the 950th year of Kali Yuga, the idol was reinstalled. In the year 960 of the Kali calendar, during the reign of King Kotha Marthandan, the Abhisravana Mandapam was constructed.

In the realm of celebrations at Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Alpasi Ulsavam:

Festivals are held twice a year, in the months of Thulam (Alppasi) and Meenam, at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple (Painkuni). The Ulsavam cannot proceed without a ceremony that grants official permission to do so (festival). Anujna is the term for this practice. Mannuneeru Koral, Mula Pooja, Kalasam, etc. are just a few of the alternative ceremonies. Kodiyettu (flag hoisting) is performed at the gold flag pole of Sree Padmanabhaswamy and the silver flag pole of Sree Krishnaswamy to kick off the celebration.

Ten days are devoted to the celebration, with the highlights being the Palliveta and Arat processions on days nine and ten. Besides the regular rituals, there are additional Ulsava Kalasams. Twice a day, at 4:30 and 8:30, special Sreebalies (Processions) are held. With one exception, there is no daytime Sreebali on the first day.

  • Day 1: Simhaasana vaahanam.
  • Day 2: Anantha vaahanam.
  • Day 3: Kamala vaahanam.
  • Day 4: Pallakku vaahanam.
  • Day 5: Garuda vaahanam.
  • Day 6: Indra vaahanam.
  • Day 7: Pallakku vaahanam.
  • Day 8: Garuda vaahanam.
  • Day 9: Indra vaahanam.
  • Day 10: Indra vaahanam.

Painkuni Utsavam:

The only difference between this Utsavam and the Alpasi Festival is the asterism, yet both celebrate the harvest. For Alpasi, the focus is on the star Thiruvonam, beneath which the Arat takes place on its own, while for Painkuni, it is on the day of Kodiyettu (flag hoisting), for which the asterism is Rohini. In honor of this event, huge Pandava statues are set up opposite the Temple’s eastern entrance.
