Tiruchanoor History

Several Puranas detail the arrival of Padmavathi Devi, the goddess who is Lord Venkateswara’s consort, and the focus of worship at the Tiruchanur Padmavathi Temple. A religious Brahmin named Pundarika from long ago is the subject of a legend. He fulfilled all the duties prescribed by the Shastras, yet he was unable to father a son. Finally, at age 50, he was blessed with a son, whom he named Madhava.

He took great pains in raising the son, making sure he was well-educated in all fields and married to a devout spouse. After a while, Madhava strayed from the straight and narrow and started pursuing another woman. Once she died, he became completely insane and began wandering the countryside.

He once joined a group of pilgrims on their journey to Tirumala. On hiking to Sudarshan and bathing in its holy waters, he was cleansed of his sins. While arriving at that spot, he heard a voice from on high telling him to take a plunge in the Swami Pushkarini in order to earn the favor of Lord Varaha Swamy. During a lengthy gestation period, King Mitravarman of Thondamandalam (also known as Akasharaja) was born.

As he grew up, Prince Akasharaja blossomed into a handsome and wise man. He tied the knot with the presiding deity Dharanidevi. Infertility was a source of great sadness for the royal couple. Akasharaja wanted to take part in a yagna after hearing the priest advocate it. The couple turned over the sacrificial field and saw a lovely young lady concealed under a thousand-petaled lotus. The voice of God instructed the king to nurture the child with kindness and mercy.

Padamavathi is the name given to the baby since it was discovered in the lotus posture (Padma). After Padmavathi had grown up, Lord Venkateshwara set out to find her so that they may be married. The sacred marriage of Lord Srinivasa and Goddess Padmavathi was a momentous occasion. During his reign, Tondaman Chakravarthi, the elder brother of the goddess Padmavathi, oversaw the building of the Tiruchanur Padmavathi Temple.
