In the month of Ashwin on the Telugu calendar, the Bathukamma festival is held for nine days. Bathukamma begins on Bhadrapada Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya and ends with the Saddula Bathukamma celebration on the ninth day of ashtami, which is known as Durga ashtami in the rest of India. Bathukamma happens at the same time as the 9-day Sharad Navratri festival, which is celebrated all over India. On the Gregorian calendar, it takes place between September and October.

Myth says that during this time, Goddess Gauri killed Mahishasur, the king of demons, and then went to sleep because she was tired. She woke up on Dashami because people prayed for her.
How is Bathukamma 2022 celebrated in Telangana:
- Bathukamma is also a way to honour Goddess Parvati, who is a big fan of flowers and is also remembered on this day.
- On the day of the festival, young unmarried girls dance around these Bathukammas while singing traditional songs and telling stories from the past.
- After giving flowers and sweets to Goddess Gauri, these cones are then set afloat in the river.
- During this festival, jaggery is used to make a sweet dish called maleeda, which is then shared with everyone after the puja.
- During Bathukamma, different cultural events like dance, music, and plays are put on. During this time, it’s important to keep an eye out for “jataras,” which are local street plays. During the celebration, people sing songs that are only known in Bathukamma.
- This festival is all about colours, water, and flowers. Women dress up in new sarees and wear gold jewellery.
- During the rituals, young girls wear the traditional “Langa Oni,” which means “half sarees.” After the Bathukamma is put in water, married women exchange kumkum and turmeric on their faces.
