The Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Temple’s representation of the Goddess is special and beautiful to behold. The idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi is 3 feet tall and weights 40 kg, in contrast to the traditional image of Goddess Lakshmi sitting calmly on a Lotus. The idol has four limbs and is in a standing position. She is holding an Mhalunga in her lower right hand (a kind of Citrus fruit). She is holding a big mace in her upper right hand and a bowl in her lower left. She is holding a Khetaka, or shield, in her upper left hand.
The Goddess’ Vahana, a stone lion, is behind her. Lord Vishnu’s representation, a Sheshnag, may be seen on the goddess’ crown. A Shiva Linga is also engraved on the crown, but the devotees cannot see it because it is hidden by the Goddess’s decorations.
