Tamil Nadu’s Chaitra Pournami:

A ceremony known as Chitra Pournami is held on the Poornima day, or full moon day, which happens on any day between April 15 and May 15 in the Tamil month of Chithirai. This year, it falls on April 26. ( i.e on Monday). One of the significant festivals observed in Tamil Nadu is Chitra Pournami.

 Chitragupta’s birthday is commemorated on this auspicious day. The Chitra Pournami rite, also known as Chithirai Pournami (in Tamil), honours Chitra Gupta, who is seen as Lord Yama’s side. Chitra and Gupta both refer to collections of images. The holiday known as Chitra Poornima honours Chitra Gupta, also known as the Keeper of Deeds. He is regarded as Lord Yama’s younger brother and was created by Lord Brahma through the Sun God.

To wash away the sins committed and to obtain virtue for the hereafter, special poojas are performed at temples and people bathe in holy rivers and temple ponds. You can atone for all of your sins at Chitra Pournami. On the day of Chitra Pournami in Tiruvannamalai, a large number of people would observe fasting (Viratham in Tamil) and take the holy walk.

In our home, we used to celebrate Chitra Pournami in a spectacular way every year by decorating the house with maakolam and by giving Navadhaniyam (9 sorts of grains) in a Muram, Vellai pongal (without salt), Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai, Raw Mango Pachadi, Panagam, and Neer Mor for neivedyam.

As a result, I’ve included the steps for celebrating Chitra Pournami below based on our experience. I sincerely hope you find it useful. Brahmins from Tamil Nadu may celebrate differently from this. So if you have any questions about your tradition, please ask the family’s elders.

Ingredients required for neivedyam and pooja :

  1. Winnowing basket for Pooja, called Muram in Tamil
  2. New mud pot for neer mor, panagam, and pongal preparation ( This is optional)
  3. 9 grains (any 9 from the following list; Navadhaniyam) Green moong dal, Masoor dal, Toor dal, Urad dal (Black or White), Peas, Rajma, Black eyed peas (karamani), Ragi, Wheat, Arisi nel (unhusked rice), Yellow moong dal, and chickpeas (brown and white).
  4. To draw maakolam, use either uncooked rice (maavu arisi) or rice flour 
  5. One against keeping raw mangoes close to muram.
  6. Kai visiri in Tamil
  7. One coconut, fully grown (it would be ideal if it had the shell and mattai).
  8. On one piece of writing, “Chithiranar Puthiranar Sivanadiyar Perungkanakar” was used.
  9. One pen lamp, two bananas, one coconut, a wick, oil or ghee, matchbox, incense stick, dhoop, camphor, betel leaf, and nut (Vetrilai paaku).

Neivedyam Preparations : 

  • If making handmade rice flour for sweet pidi kozhukattai, use raw rice (Maavu arisi) OR use store-bought modak flour (kozhukattai maavu).
  • Mango pachadi is made with raw mango, jaggery, and green chilli.
  • Curd, water, ginger, green chilli, and neer mor seasoning components
  • For making white pongal without salt, use uncooked rice (sona masoori of high grade).
  • To make panagam, you’ll need water, edible camphor, jaggery, cardamom, and cloves.

Activities Of The Festival Day:

  • The following morning at around six o’clock, we take a head bath and begin preparing dishes for neivedyam.
  • By combining 1 cup of handmade rice flour with 1 cup of grated jaggery and 1.25 cups of water, along with 1/4 tsp of cardamom powder and 2 tbsp of grated coconut, we may create delectable Pidi kozhukattai.
  • Use your fingers to make shapes, then steam it in an idli pot. Wash and pressure cook half a cup of uncooked rice with 2.5 cups of water in the interim. Cook on very low heat for two whistles. Remove the rice and mash it. Place in a basin. Make a gouge in the middle. Keep a tiny piece of banana, some jaggery, and some ghee. You can also create a sambar without any garlic or onions if you’d like.
  • Then, combine water, jaggery, a pinch of edible camphor, crushed cloves, and cardamom to create Panagam. Create more of it and temper it. If you have any, keep all the neivedyam dishes on plates and in mud pots. For preparing pongal and serving panakam, neer mor, my MIL used to purchase a new mud pot every year. Each year, she buys three pots. However, that practise is no longer relevant.
  •  In our home, we observe the Chitra Pournami event in the manner described. Depending on your tradition, the celebration processes could differ slightly. Consult the senior citizens in your home and make the necessary improvements.
