Kedara Gauri Vrat, also known as ‘Kedareshwar Vrat,’ is an auspicious Hindu festival observed on ‘Amavasya’ (no moon day) during the celebrated Diwali holiday. The purpose of this vrat is to worship Lord Shiva. It was believed, according to Hindu mythology, that Goddess Parvati followed the Kedara Gauri Vrat in order to merge with Lord Shiva. In the northern portions of India, the Kedara Gauri Vrat is observed on the Amavasya of the month of Kartik, whilst in the southern regions, it is observed on the Amavasya of the month of Ashwin. 

Initially, devotees began their fast on Ashtami, the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight of the moon) of the Kartik or Ashwin month, and it ended on Amavasya during Diwali. In modern times, however, the Kedara Gauri Vrat is exclusively commemorated on Amavasi Day, also known as Deepavali. It is celebrated with tremendous fervour and merriment across India, particularly in the southern states.

• The Deepavali Nomulu will occur at different times in various places. Some regions will celebrate Deepavali Nomulu in the morning, while others will do so in the evening.

Significance of the Kedara Gauri Vrat or Deepavali Nomulu: 

The significance of the Kedara Gauri Vrat is described in numerous Hindu holy texts, such as the Skanda Purana. Several gods and goddesses also underwent this sacred fast in order to achieve their goals. Kedara Gauri Vrat is one of the main Saivite vratas that Lord Shiva devotees attend with devotion. According to tradition, Devi Parvati practised this vratam in order to merge with Lord Shiva, after which He was known as “Ardha Nareeshwara.”

Lord Vishnu likewise observed this vrat in order to become the Lord of Vaikunta, and Lord Brahma received his Hamsa Vahan as a result. Accordingly, it is claimed that a person who performs the Kedara Gauri Vrat 21 times with devotion will be rewarded with all worldly desires and finally attain “Moksha” by uniting with the Supreme Being. This auspicious vratam is therefore observed by everyone, regardless of caste, creed, or religious distinctions.

Procedure of the Kedara Gauri Vrat or Deepavali Nomulu: 

• During the Kedara Gauri Vrat, devotees rise before daybreak, bathe, and pray to Lord Shiva for his heavenly blessings of prosperity and wealth. 
• The puja begins with the placement of Lord KedarIshvara in a ‘Kalash’ containing water. 
• A mandap or roof is also constructed atop the Kalasham. The devotees then create vrata threads by combining 21 fibres with 21 knots. 
• This thread is then wrapped around the Kalash and venerated with sandalwood paste, rice, flowers, and fruits. 
• On the day of Kedara Gauri Vrat, 21 distinct types of ‘Naivedyam’ are cooked and offered to the Lord. 
• The observer of this vrat is also required to invite 21 Brahmins and provide them with food, clothing, and cash.

Rituals of the Kedara Gauri Vrat or Deepavali Nomulu: 

Fasting is an important daily ritual. In some locations, the Kedara Gauri Vrat is observed for 21 days, although at today, the majority of devotees observe a one-day fast. One who observes this vrat abstains from food and drink till the conclusion of the puja. Only one meal is permitted after offering food to Brahmins. On Kedara Gauri Vrat, partial fasting is permitted for those who cannot observe a complete fast. In this, devotees are permitted to consume fruits and dairy items.
