The Devanathaswamy temple, also known as the Thiruvanthipuram Kovil, is located in Thiruvanthipuram, which is a hamlet located on the outskirts of Cuddalore in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. This temple is devoted to the Hindu deity Vishnu. The Divya Prabandha, an early mediaeval Tamil canon composed of Azhwar saints who lived around the sixth to ninth centuries AD, praises the temple’s construction, which was done in the Dravidian style of architecture. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam that is devoted to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Devanathaswamy, and his spouse Lakshmi is worshipped as Hemabhujavalli. Both of these deities are venerated here.

It is thought that the Cholas, who ruled throughout the middle ages, were responsible for building the temple in its present shape. Subsequently, the Pandyas, the Hoysala Empire, and the Vijayanagara Empire all contributed to the temple’s growth. The temple comprises fifty inscriptions by Kulothunga Chola I (1070–1120),Vikrama Chola (1118–1135), Rajaraja Chola III (1216–1256), Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan (1251–1268), Vikrama Pandya, Vira Pandya III, Vijayanagar monarch Achyuta Deva Raya (1529–1542 CE) and Koperunjinga.

The Epigraphical Department has discovered more than fifty inscriptions from the Chola period that date back to the mediaeval era inside the temple. The inscriptions reveal donations to the temple from Kulothunga Chola I (1070–1120), Vikrama Chola (1118–1135), Rajaraja Chola III (1216–1256), Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan (1251–1268), Vikrama Pandya, Vira Pandya III, Vijayanagar kingAchyuta Deva Raya (1529–1542 CE) and Koperunjinga. During the reign of Rajaraja Chola III, the Chola nation was besieged, and the Rajaraja himself was imprisoned by Koperunjinga, a member of the Pallava dynasty. Vira Narasimha II (1220-1234) came to the aid of the Chola and, in the end, was responsible for the death of the King of Ceylon, Parakramabahu. During the reign of Koperunjinga, a temple tower was built, and during the reign of Maravarman Sundara Pandyan, worship services were standardised to be comparable to those at other temples. During the time of the Vijayanara Empire, the people who were descended from Ramanuja were granted access to unique religious opportunities. The Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu is in charge of the temple’s upkeep and administration in contemporary times.

Festivals:

During religious celebrations as well as on a daily basis, the priests of the temple carry out the rites and ceremonies known as pooja in accordance with the Vadakalai sampradayam (Vaikashasana Agama). The Vaishnavaite group is a sub-caste of the Brahmin religion, and all of the priests at this temple, as well as those at the other Vishnu temples throughout Tamil Nadu, are members of this society. The temple rites are conducted six times a day: Ushatkalam at 7 a.m., Kalashanti at 8:00 a.m., Uchikalam at 12:00 p.m., Sayarakshai at 6:00 p.m., Irandamkalam at 7:00 p.m. and Ardha Jamam at 10:00 p.m. Each rite consists of three stages: the alankaram (decoration), the naivedyam (food offering), and the deepa aradhanai (waving of lights). These three stages are performed for both Neelamegha Perumal and Tirukannapura Nayagi. The final phase of worship consists of the playing of the nagaswaram (an instrument that resembles a pipe) and the tavil (an instrument that resembles a percussion instrument), as well as the recitation of religious instructions from the Vedas (a sacred text) by priests, while worshippers prostrate themselves in front of the temple mast. At the temple, there are ceremonies that take place on a weekly, monthly, and fortnightly basis respectively.
