The Flamingo Festival, held annually in Pullicat Lake and Nella Pattu in Sullurpet mandal, Andhra Pradesh, began on January 7 with much fanfare and has become a major attraction for birdwatchers. The district collector at the time, Praveen Kumar, visited Sullurpeta in 2000 and was so taken aback by its beauty that he made it a priority to increase tourism there. A three-day Flamingo festival was planned in 2001 by the District Collector.
