You should be interested in the story of how the shrine came to be and the most important parts of Guruvayur’s history. So, according to the legend, the god in Guruvayur is more than 5,000 years old. It is thought that the main shrine was rebuilt in 1638 A.D. The five devotees Poonthanam, Melpattur, Vilvamangalam, Kururamma, and Prince Manadevan were mainly responsible for making it Kerala’s most famous pilgrimage site (Zamorin). In 1716 AD. The Dutch took things from the temple and set it on fire. It was fixed up again in 1747. In 1766 AD. Haider Ali took over Calicut and Guruvayur, but he left the temple alone because Vatakkepat Variyar paid him 10,000 Ferams. The general feeling of insecurity meant that pilgrims stopped coming and renters stopped getting paid every year. On the advice of the Governor of Malabar, Srinivasa Rao, Haider Ali gave a “Devadaya” (a free gift) to the temple in 1780 AD. This kept the temple from going out of business for good.

In 1789, Haider Ali’s son and successor, Tipu Sultan, came to the area to fight the Zamorin and try to get Hindus to convert to Islam. Fearing that the image would be destroyed, the Mulavigraha (the main deity) was buried and the Utsavavigraha (the procession deity) was taken to Ambalapuzha. Tipu set the temple on fire and stole from it. But a rainstorm and a voice from nowhere stopped a major disaster. After the English got rid of Tipu, both of the vigrahas were put back in place. Between 1875 and 1900, the Ullanad Panikars moved in and gave the lord both their free secures and money from their family estates. [Like Chempakasseri Nambudiri and Desavarma Nambudiri, who gave everything they owned to the Lord].

In 1841, the Government of Madras gave back the Devadaya that Tipu Sultan had taken. Slowly and steadily, the temple grew rich. All of the parts were rebuilt, fixed up, and decorated. At the turn of the 20th century, the temple’s manager, Sri Konti Menon, made many changes to the way it was run. In 1928, the Zamorin was given control over the temple’s running again.

In 1931 and 1932, a Sathyagraha was started by Kerala Gandhi, aka Kelappan, a well-known group leader from Kerala, to make sure that untouchables could get into the temple. All of this led to the Travancore Temple Entry proclamation in 1936 and similar measures in British Malabar in 1946 and Cochin in 1947. Since then, every Hindu has been able to see the Lord outside of the sanctum sanctorum (Sree kovil). Still, the Namaskara sadhya (feast) continued to be served only to Brahmins in the Uttupura (dining hall). In the end, this tradition also died. Since January 1, 1982, the Devaswam has been giving Prasadam to 500–1000 pilgrims (Prasada Oottu). Even devotees can make a gift of any amount to get free food.
