Before ascending to heaven, Lord Sri Krishna gave his personal Idol to his finest student Uddhava and instructed him to install the Idol, in conjunction with Guru, for the benefit of all creatures. This was done before Lord Sri Krishna’s departure. In response to Uddhava’s request, Guru and Vayu undertook a search for an appropriate location and were successful in locating a lovely lake that was overflowing with lotuses and was home to Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi.
After seeing that they were in possession of the Idol, Lord Siva instructed his followers to place the Idol at this location, while he and the Goddess were relocated to the Mammiyur temple in the vicinity. Later on, the divine architect Viswakarma constructed a temple for the idol to be housed here. As Guru and Vayu were responsible for installing the idol, the locals came to refer to this location as Guruvayur in their language. The holy feet of the Lord is bathed in sunlight on the first day of the Malayalam calendar year, which is also known as the day of Vishnu.

According to a different version of the mythology, it was an avatar of Lord Vishnu named Parasurama who gave the order to Guru and Vayu to place the idol in this location. It is stated that King Parikshit, the grandson of Arjuna, worshipped the Lord here in the temple tank while taking a bath in order to be cured of leprosy. The legend that the Pandya King came to this temple, took a bath in the temple tank, and worshipped the Lord in order to be freed from the curse that said he would die from a snake bite is another fascinating tale connected to this temple. He subsequently constructed the temple to demonstrate his dedication to the religion.

It is stated that Sage Kasyapa, Sutapa, and Vasudeva worshipped the Lord here. Also mentioned is Lord Brahma, who is known as the God of Creation. When the King and Queen saw Vishnu appear in front of them as a response to their prayers, they begged to the Lord to give them a son who was just like Vishnu. After they repeated it three times, the Lord revealed to them that they would have three jams or births and that He would be born to them in each of their three incarnations.
As they continued to recite it, the Lord revealed this to them. When some time passed, the Lord was born to them. The first time he was born to them, he was known as Prisnigarbha, and he was the one who educated people about the significance of brahmacharya. The second time around, he was born to Kashyapa and Aditi, and he assumed the shape of Vamana during this incarnation. They were Krishna’s parents in their third incarnation when they took the form of Vasudeva and Devaki.
