Located on the banks of the Noyyal River, Coimbatore is the third biggest city in Tamil Nadu and one of the most industrialized towns in the state. The city has been inhabited since before the 2nd or 3rd century AD when it was founded by Karikalan, the first of the early Cholas. The Rashtrakutas, the Chalukyas, the Pandyas, the Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara monarchs were some of its other prominent rulers. After Kongunadu and the rest of the state were conquered by the British, the city was renamed Coimbatore (also spelled Kovai in the native Tamil language).

Coimbatore, located in the Western ghats’ rain shadow, benefits from the constant cool wind that blows through the 25-kilometer-long Palakkad gap all year round. The city of Coimbatore is known for its thriving textile industry, which was established on the back of the region’s successful cotton crop, which was made possible by the city’s rich black soil. Several textile mills followed the establishment of the first in 1888, providing locals and residents of adjacent Districts with steady work. Because of this, the city’s economy has flourished, and it is now recognized as one of South India’s premier industrial centers.

According to the myth:

Markandeya was born knowing he would only live to be 16 years old. Markandeya began worshipping Lord Siva after learning from his father about the average human life span. Marakandeyea spent his last day praying at Thirukadayur Temple, where he clung to the Siva Linga with both hands. Markandeya Soul was caught in Yama’s Yamapasa as he attempted to pull.

Siva was enraged, kicked Yama to the ground, and bestowed a boon onto Markandeya. Yama atoned in Kowsika Puri for the sins of Lord Siva. Yama himself crafted the Siva Linga. Yama was released from his duties when the crimes were forgiven. When Yama abandoned the Siva Linga, it was erected by Sage Viswamitra.

This temple was built around the year 1300. This temple’s Linga was fashioned from Spume. Hence, Ghee and Curd are not used in Abhishekam. The 60th, 70th, 80th, and 100th wedding anniversaries are particularly celebrated in this temple.
