Local tradition has it that a childless man named Somasharma was brought here by divine intervention when the residents of Thanthondrimalai (also known as Thanthonimalai) begged for his assistance in building a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. The Kalyana Venkatramana Swamy Koil was constructed with Somasharma’s assistance. As soon as the temple was finished, he and his wife went there to receive a baby blessing from Kalyana Venkatramanar.
When Danganachari and the destitute Soma Sharma prayed to Lord Venkataramanaswamy in this sacred abode, their prayers were granted, as told in the puranic texts. Several holy texts extol the greatness of this celestial Lord, including the Thanthondrimalai Mahathmiyam, the Vishnu Dharmodhram, and the Venkatesh Parakramam. Apart from its more common name, “Swayam Viyaktha Venkatagiri,” this temple is known for its heavenly atmosphere.

During the Saturdays of the Tamil month Puratasi, thousands of worshippers make their way to this temple to pray to this illustrious deity. According to local tradition, a childless man named Somasharma once stopped at the banks of the Cauvery River with his wife while on his way to Tirupathi to ask for a child boon. In his dreams, the wise man Naradha told him to find the town of Tirumakudalur, where he would be welcomed. Several sculptors met Somasharma when he arrived and brought him here.
The rock cracked open, and Perumal stepped out, granting the devotee’s wish and deciding to stay for the benefit of future worshippers. Legend has it that this is where a piece of Tiruvengadam hill crashed to the ground while Vayu and Adisesha fought. Soon after the temple was finished being built, Somasharma heard a voice telling him to bring his wife here to worship. Kalyana Venkataramanaswamy, taking the shape of Tirupati Venkateshwara (Bala), rewarded Somasharma and his wife with a kid when they worshiped him upon their return.
From that point on, devotees have also referred to this temple as Then Tirupati, which literally translates to “Tirupati of the south” (for those unfamiliar with Thirupathi, it’s a temple on the southernmost tip of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, dedicated to the gods Venkatachalapathy and Padmavathi Thaayar. As frequent readers know, I went to a Radha Kalyanam at Manathattai Agraharam, but this temple also hosts the weddings of ordinary people who want to seek out the blessings of Kalyana Venkatramana Swamy. After praying, we walked down to the base of the mound and remained there for many more hours, until around five in the evening.
