While on a voyage, Sri Vyasaraju, who was the Spiritual Guru of Sri Krishna Devaraya of the Vijayanagara kingdom, stopped at Shilpagiri (also known as Chippagiri) with his pupils. Shilpagiri is also known as Chippagiri. Sri Vyasaraju had dreams in which he saw Anjaneya Swamy, and in those visions, Anjaneya Swamy gave Sri Vyasaraju instructions about where the temple should be erected. Sri Vyasarju and his students went into the woods to look for the location, and while they were there, they put a neem stick in the ground next to a pile of sand. They were taken aback when the dry neem stick began to sprout new growth, including leaves, which appeared on the surface of the dry neem stick. Because of this, people eventually started referring to this location as Nettikallu.
