In the Indian state of Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, Kukke Subramanya (IAST: Kukke Subrahmaya) is a Hindu temple. It is situated in the village of Subramanya, Kadaba Taluk (formerly Sullia Taluk). Kartikeya is revered as Subramanya, the ruler of all serpents, in this temple. According to the epics, when the Garuda threatened them, the celestial serpent Vasuki and other serpents sought shelter under Subramanya. In the temple, Shivalli Madhva Brahmins serve as priests. The poojas and other daily rites in the temple are carried out in accordance with the Tantra Sara Sangraha of Madhvacharya.

According to legend, the Kukke Subramanya Temple is described in detail in the chapter ‘Sahyadrikhanda’ of Skanda Puranam. According to the Puranas, the Subrahmanya Kshetra is located on the banks of the Dhara River. In ancient times, Subrahmanya was known as Kukke Pattana.
In the scriptures of “Shankara Vijaya”, Anandagiri also mentions that Sri Adi Shankaracharya visited the place and referred to the place as “Bhaje Kukke Lingam” in his work “Subrahmanya Bhujangaprayata Stotram”.
Kukke Subramanya Temple Legend
The legend of the Kukke Subramanya Temple’s origins is detailed in the Skanda Puranam. Vasuki, the snake king, was hiding in the cave called Biladvara (near the temple) to avoid Garuda, who was hunting snakes to satisfy his hunger. Vasuki was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. Garuda spotted Vasuki and launched a vicious attack.
The great Sage Kashyapa Muni then intervened, telling Garuda to go to the Ramanaka islands (modern-day Fiji) to hunt for snakes. He also asked Vasuki to invoke Lord Shiva’s protection. Following his penance, Lord Shiva appeared to Vasuki and informed him that his son Karthikeya (Subrahmanya) would come and reside in the following Kalpa.
After defeating the demon Tarakasura in the following Kalpa, Lord Subrahmanya and his brother Lord Ganesha arrived in Kumara Parvatha. Lord Indra greeted them with greetings. He proposed marriage to Lord Subrahmanya and his daughter Devasena. The Lord agreed, and the divine marriage took place on the mountain of Kumara Parvatha.
On Margashira Shuddha Shasthi, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Lord Brahma attended the marriage. Vasuki, the serpent, also attended the ceremony. Lord Subrahmanya blessed him and promised to stay with them for their protection.
