Perspective of the temple:

The goddess Durga took on the form of Mahishasura Mardini in order to slay the asura king Mahisasura. Mahishasura was the monarch over the Mahisha or Mahishaka kingdom. Mahisha, according to the Hindu Puranas, was the child of Asura King Rambha and Shyamala, a stunning female buffalo. Princess Shyamalan was cursed and turned into a water buffalo. Due to Rambha’s magical abilities, he assumed the form of a male buffalo, and as a result of their union, Mahisha was born with a buffalo head and a human body. Mahishasura has the supernatural ability to transform into a buffalo or a person as he pleases. Buffalo is referred to as Mahisha in Sanskrit.

Mahishasura wiped out human life and conquered both Earth (Prithvi Lokam) and Deva Loka (Swarga Lokam), bringing about their conquest, by attacking Lord Indra, the ruler of the Devas. All the Gods and Goddesses turned to Lord Vishnu for guidance. The Trimurti energies—the Trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahadeva—joined forces to form Goddess Durga (Mahamaya). Goddess Durga can defeat the demon rakshas Mahisha and mounts a lion. She has ten arms with ten different soldiers on each. At the end of their brutal battle with Mahisha, Durga Maa vanquished Mahishasura.

Legend Stories A bout Mahishsura Amma :

Legend has it that Durga defeated Mahishasura, a demonic being who was thought to be invincible. She was thus given the name Mahishasuramardini after his death (conqueror of Mahisha). The goddess Mahishasuramardhini, seen as an incarnation of the goddess Durga, is depicted in the granite-carved cave temple that bears her name. This conflict is depicted on the cave’s inner relief. The goddess is portrayed riding a lion and pursuing the fleeing Mahisha and his companions while wielding a bow and arrow in each of her many arms.
