This southern Indian zoo is located in the western part of Tamil Nadu state. Located on the major route from Udhagamandalam to Mysore, it was founded in 1940 and covers an area of 124 square miles (322 square kilometers). The sanctuary is made up of rolling hills, deep valleys, and a network of wetlands and streams that flow year-round. Elephants, gaurs (Indian bison), tigers, black leopards, sloth bears, hyenas, jackals, wild pigs, pythons, grey jungle fowl, spur fowl, and golden eagles all call this protected area home.

The Mudumalai National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1940 and is South India’s first sanctuary. Tigers have been protected at Mudumalai since April 2007, when the state government of Tamil Nadu declared the area a tiger reserve. On the boundary between Karnataka and Kerala, close to both Bandipur National Park and Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, you’ll find this protected area.
The sanctuary, located at an elevation of 1140 meters on the Ooty–Mysore route, spans an area of 103.24 square kilometers. Elephants, tigers, gaurs, leopards, deer, wild dogs, and other endangered and fragile species thrive in the park’s protected environment. Among of the park’s approximately 200 bird species include the White-rumped vulture, long-billed vulture, Red crest, Mynas, Parakeets, Owls, and many more.
