Mangalagiri Temple Lord Maha Vishnu appeared as Sri Panakala Narasimha Swamy in this avatar. Mangala Giri means Holy Hill. This is one of the eight temples that the Lord himself chose to abide in so that he might save mankind from the consequences of their sins. When seen from afar, the mountain seems to be resting like an elephant. The Mukha Mantap was constructed in the 16th century by Krishna Devaraya, a member of the Vijayanagara dynasty. During the years 1807 and 1809 A.D., Raja Vasireddi Venkatadri Nayudu constructed the Temple Tower, which stands at a height of 153 feet.
According to the legends, an ancient monarch named Pariyatra had a son who was called Hrusva Sringi and was born with a birth defect. Hrusva Sringi embarked on a trip with the hopes of ridding himself of the physical defects that plagued him. He eventually arrived to Mangalagiri Hill and began to reside there. He devoted three years of his life to enduring severe penance for Lord Narasimha. When His father Pariyatra found out about this, he became upset and began to consider taking him back home. Pariyatra made it to Mangalagiri and attempted to talk his son out of his vow of celibacy there. Because Hrusva Sringi could not be persuaded by his father’s arguments, he took the form of an elephant and transformed himself into the mountain Mangalagiri in order to offer his own body to the Lord as a place of worship.

In later times, an incarnation of the god Vishnu known as Lord Narasimha used his disc to vanquish the demon Namuchi, at which point he showed himself at this location.
Lord Rama is said to have traveled to Mangalagiri in search of salvation, according to one of the many legends that are linked with this temple. Because of this, the hill is sometimes referred to as Totadri. During the time of the Krutayuga, when the Mandara Hill was churning the Ocean of Milk, the Goddess Lakshmi arose through this process. The Devas brought water from the sacred rivers of the region to use in the construction of the temple tank at Mangalagiri. The Goddess Lakshmi bathed in this Tirtha before offering herself to Lord Vishnu as his adored wife after the Devas had completed the construction of the temple tank. Lakshmi Pushkarini was the one who gave this Tirtha its name. At these slopes of the Mangalagiri Hills, Yudistara, the eldest of the Pandavas, established Lord Narasimha as the deity of this place.
