Tikkana Somayaji did not begin the translation of the Mahabharatha into Telugu until after he had offered prayers to the god located here. The telling of the tale goes like this, Once upon a time, there was a cattle baron by the name of Mukanti Reddy who liked to look out into the forest and admire the lush grass. Mukanti realized one day that one of his cows was not producing milk, so he gave instructions to the cowherd to keep a watch on the cow in question and determine why it was not producing milk.

The cowherd maintained a close watch on the cow and followed it when it walked away from the other animals in the herd. The cowherd has discovered that the cow is dumping her milk on an ant mound. A little bit angry, he lifted his axe to beat the cow. A cow escaped from the cowherd’s axe, but it struck the rock in the ant hill, where blood started seeping out.

The name “Nellore” for the city is also associated with this myth. Since the stone lingam was discovered under the “Nelli” tree (Nelli Tree – Philanthus Emblica), the region came to be known as Nelli-ur, which is now known as Nellore.

The temple tower that overlooks this area is brightly painted and has protruding stucco figures of many gods and goddesses. On the roof of the four-pillared mandapam (hall) that is located in front of the courtyard of the temple tower, there is a big sculpted figure of Lord Shiva. This sculpture depicts Lord Shiva in a position where he is bestowing his blessings on the worshippers who are coming.

The exact opposite is where you’ll find an enormous Ganesha idol. Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and the goddess Parvati Devi, and it’s said that this particular statue is one of the biggest in all of the surrounding locations. It also seems that his car, “Mushika,” also known as “The Rat,” is laying at the feet of the Lord.
