Periyar is home to a number of beautiful lakes, including one that is considered to be among the most renowned in all of Kerala. The Periyar Lake is also commonly known as the Thekkady Lake. Both names relate to the same body of water. Periyar Lake is a lake that is located inside the Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. Because of the lake’s recognizable placement within the park, it is commonly referred to by its local name of Periyar Lake. Each year, tens of hundreds of thousands of people visit the lake, which is managed by the Forest and Wildlife Department of the state of Kerala.

Periyar or Mullaperiyar, whichever you like to call it, is the longest river in Kerala, and in 1895, a dam was constructed on it, which resulted in the creation of this lake. The Periyar Lake that exists now was created when the Mullaperiyar Dam was built, and it has an area equal to 10 square miles (or 26 square kilometers).

When you go out on the lake in a boat, you will have a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the local waterfowl, which have made this reservoir renowned. Periyar Lake is located inside a protected region and helps to preserve a variety of flora, fauna, and aquatic life, including some species that are very uncommon, native to the area, and endangered as a result.

The Past Hiding Beneath Periyar Lake

In spite of the fact that Periyar National Park was established a long time ago, the lake itself has its own tale to tell. Over the Periyar River, the Mullaperiyar Dam was constructed in the year 1895. A few years later, in 1899, the Periyar Lake Reserve was created as a result of the efforts that were put into constructing this brick gravity dam. The surrounding forest went from being a private game reserve to a wildlife sanctuary, and then it was ultimately turned into a national park, but the lake itself was left mostly unaltered during all of these transitions in ownership and status.

The configuration of Lake Periyar

The Periyar Lake serves as the focal point of both the Periyar National Park and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. It has a total land area of 10 square miles, which is equivalent to 26 square kilometers. At about 100 meters above average tide level, the lake in the Periyar forest complex has the lowest elevation of all of its features.

This lake serves as the last and largest drainage reservoir for the Periyar River, which is the state’s longest river. Since it is also dammed by the Mullaperiyar Dam, which is located at the junction of both rivers, the Mullayar River is also considered to be one of the rivers that contribute to the water that makes up Periyar Lake.
