Ancient History of the Bapatla Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple

This temple was built around 515 CE by the Saliavahana dynasty. In the fifth century A.D., during the reign of King Krimikanta Chola of the Chola people, this temple was constructed. At this time, Chola King set up shrines to eight local deities at the village’s cardinal points.

Both the Gajapati and the later Vijayanagara dynasties supported this temple. The Muslim kings and later the British rulers took use of this shrine for their own gain. The eight village deities were smashed to pieces by the French occupiers. The devoted citizens of the Village put the statue of their current god, Poleramma, at the southernmost location.

Both the Rajahmundry nobleman Diwan Sri Raja Kadrengula Jogi Jagannatha Rao Bahadur and his son Raja Vasireddi Venkatadri were responsible for the temple’s restoration. Zamindar Raja Vasireddi Venkatadri of Challapalli erected the temple’s tower in the year 1850. On October 23rd, 2011, a temple tower that was 85 feet tall and 25 feet wide suddenly caved down.
