Gautam, the Tamil word for pot, is whence Thirukkadaiyur gets its name. Vishnu, Indra, and the other Devas carried the ambrosia pot here because they were in search of a divine setting in which to partake of the ambrosia they had churned at the Samudra Manthan. They ate it without first worshipping Ganesha, who is traditionally honoured before beginning any major project.

Ganesha took the pot of Amrita and hid it in Tirukkadaiyur because he was saddened and outraged by the devas’ unintentional offence. After he had poured some of the Amrita over a Shiva Lingam he had erected in honour of his parents, Ganesha was able to return home. Amrita Ghat Eshwarar, from the Sanskrit for “Lord that leads to immortality” (‘Immortality’ (Amrita) ‘Step’ (Ghat) ‘Lord’ (Eshwarar)), is the name given to the Shiva Lingam in this temple.

History of the Thirukadaiyur Shastiapthapoorthi:

Mrikandu and Marudmati saw Shiva after they had fasted and meditated for a long time.He assured them that their prayers had been heard, and that he would grant one of two wishes: they could either have a brilliant son who would die at the age of sixteen, or a dull one who would live to a ripe old age. Mrikandu and Marudmati opted for the former, and as a result, they had the honour of raising the noble Markandeya, who tragically passed away at the age of sixteen.

Markandeya’s love for Shiva deepened as he matured. Markandeya followed his father’s advice and worshipped the Shiva Lingam at Tirukkadaiyur, even bringing water from the Ganges through an underground passage. Yama, the god of death, showed up on Markandeya’s day of death with his noose to snare the man’s spirit and take it away.

Markandeya ran to the temple for safety, where he threw his arms around the Siva Lingam. Markandeya was under Shiva’s protection, and Shiva himself appeared to warn Yama away from him. As Markandeya and the Lingam tried to escape, Yama ignored them and slung the noose at them. In response to Yama’s excessive pride, Shiva kicked him and pinned him to the ground, rendering him immobile. Markandeya received Shiva’s blessing to age forever at the ripe old age of sixteen. There, Shiva was given the Sanskrit name “Kala-samsara,” which translates to “Destroyer of Time.”
