The Udayagiri Caverns are twenty rock-cut caves that date back to the early years of the 5th century CE and are located close to Vidisha in the state of Madhya Pradesh. They are home to some of India’s earliest surviving examples of Jain and Hindu architecture, as well as iconography. They are the only site whose inscriptions have the potential to be linked to a Gupta era ruler in a way that can be verified. The Archaeological Survey of India is in charge of the preservation and protection of the Udayagiri hills and caves, which together make up one of the most significant archaeological sites in India.

The Udayagiri caves have religious art from both Jainism and Hinduism. They are famous for the old gigantic relief sculpture of Parshvanatha in his incarnation that was found on their property. Important inscriptions of the Gupta dynasty dating back to the reigns of Chandragupta II (sometime about 375-415) and Kumaragupta I may be found at this location (c. 415-55). In addition to these, Udayagiri is home to a number of rock-shelters and petroglyphs, as well as ruined structures, inscriptions, water systems, fortifications, and settlement mounds; all of these elements are still the focus of ongoing archaeological research.

Cave 6 has a post-consecration Sanskrit inscription that was written by a Vaishnava minister. The inscription refers to Chandragupta II and the “year 82.” (old Indian Gupta calendar, c. 401 CE). This is often referred to as the “Chandragupta inscription of Udayagiri” or the “inscription found in the Chandragupta cave.”
On the rear wall of Cave 7 is a Sanskrit inscription written by a Shaiva devotee. Although the inscription does not identify a date, the information it contains implies that it too is from the 5th century.
Inscription in Sanskrit, dated to 425 CE, found in Cave 20 and written by a Jainism devotee. This is what’s known as the “Kumaragupta inscription of Udayagiri,” occasionally.

Cave 1 is the cave that extends the furthest to the south, although it is a fake cave. One of the cave’s sides and its front were constructed separately from the surrounding rock. The natural ledge of the rock is incorporated into the structure of the roof. Its moulding style is comparable to that which may be seen in the Hindu temple at Tigawa. Inside of the temple is a square mandapa that measures 7 feet (2.1 metres) on each side, while the sanctuary is 7 feet (2.1 metres) by 6 feet. Cunningham said that outside there were four square pillars. The god or goddess was originally chiselled into the rock on the cave’s rear wall, but over time, this carving was ruined by chiselling away at the granite. The iconographic marks have disappeared, and we do not know who the god.
