People come from far away to do the Rahu Ketu Pooja, which is a prayer to get rid of the bad effects of the planets Rahu and Ketu. The temple is one of the panchabhuta lingas, which are five Shiva shrines that represent the five elements. The vayu (air) linga is kept in the Srikalahasthi temple. Even though there doesn’t seem to be a way for air to get in, devotees say that the sanctum is very airy and that a lit lamp inside flickers all the time.
Legends say that a spider (sri), a snake (kala), and an elephant (hasti) found linga in a forest and worshipped it. The spider made a web around it, the snake put stones around it, and the elephant brought water in his trunk to wash it. But they didn’t know about other things, so the snake’s stones destroyed the web and the elephant’s stones by accident. When they found out what the other had done, they got into a fight. In the end, the elephant crushed the spider with his trunk and speared the snake with his tusk. The elephant died after being poisoned by the bite of the snake. Shiva was impressed by how much they cared about him, so the temple was named after the three people.
