2022 Karthigai Deepam:
Karthigai Deepam is a Hindu holiday that is mostly celebrated by Hindus from Tamil. Based on the Tamil Solar Calendar, the day of Karthigai Deepam is set. During Ratrimana, it happens in the month of Karthigai when Karthigai Nakshatra is in charge. This is also when Pournami, the full moon day in the month of Karthigai, falls on Karthigai Nakshatra.

Karthigai Deepam at Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar Swamy temple:
Most people know about the Karthigai Deepam celebrations at the Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar Swamy temple, which are also called the Karthikai Brahmotsavam. At the Thiruvannamalai temple, the Karthigai Deepam celebration lasts for 10 days. When Nakshatra Uthiraadam is in charge at sunrise, the party starts with Dwajarohanam. Most of the time, Nakshatra Uthiraadam happens 10 days before the main Karthigai Deepam day.

Karthigai Deepam is not the same as Bharani Deepam, which is the ceremony that starts Karthigai Deepam. Before sunrise, at 4 a.m., Bharani Deepam is done. Karthigai Deepam comes one day before or on the same day as Bharani Deepam. When Bharani Nakshatra is in effect, the Bharani Deepam is lit inside the temple. Most of the time, the Bharani Deepam lamp is lit at 4 a.m. on the same day as the Karthigai Deepam lamp.

After sunset, at 6 p.m., the flame from Bharani Deepam is used to light Karthigai Deepam. In the evening, a flame is carried to the top of the hill to light the Karthigai Maha Deepam.
Myths of Karthika deepam:
Holy texts say that Lords Brahma and Vishnu were talking about who was the most powerful of the two. Lord Shiva took the form of an infinite fire and asked them to find the top and bottom of the fire. He did this to teach them a lesson and show that he was better than everyone else. Brahma turned into a swan and flew to the top, while Vishnu turned into a boar and dug down to the bottom of the fire. But neither of them was able to do it, and they both realized that Lord Shiva was the best of all. People think that Lord Shiva later showed up as Arunachala, a huge fire hill. Every year on Karthigai Deepam, a holy fire is lit in a big lamp to remember this mythical event.
Another story says that on Karthigai Deepam, Lord Muruga was born as six flames from the third eye of Lord Shiva. He was raised by the Karthigai Pengal (six maidens) as six beautiful babies, and Goddess Parvati made him into a single boy with six faces named Shanmuga.
By lighting lamps, Karthigai Deepam also celebrates the victory of Goddess Parvati over the demon Mahishasura. The festival is a sign that good has won over evil, both spiritually and in the real world.
