Satakarni, the third Satavahana king, was a fervent follower of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy and was famous for dubbing himself Mallanna.
The combination of Jyotirlinga and Mahasakthi at one place is a very unusual and unique characteristic of this temple. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, pilgrims can touch the Shiva Lingam and perform pooja, Abhishekam, and Archana.

A large number of devotees congregate here to celebrate the Maha Shivratri holiday. Every other festival is observed here. On auspicious festival days, special poojas and archanas are conducted. Legend of Mallikarjuna Swamy:
Once upon a time, Silada Maharshi, the son of Soma Muni, undertook an arduous Tapasya in Lord Shiva’s honour. Lord Bhola Shankara fulfilled Silada Maharshi’s dream of’sons who would carry on worshipping Lord Shiva’ after being pleased with his Tapasya. Silada Maharshi gave his sons the names Nandi and Parvat. According to the granted wish, Nandi-Parvat learned everything there is to know about Lord Shiva and became great devotees of the Lord.
Parvat performs a Tapasya with his father’s consent, and Lord Shiva, pleased with his dedication, asks him what his request was. To this Parvat responds: “I would like to be a comparable mountain filled with gods who live as one family, holy 9 rivers, holy water bodies, many peaks, animals, all eight Bhairavas, and rishis, fruit-bearing and medicinal plants and trees.
While I take the form of a mountain, you will live atop me on the highest peak, which will be in the form of a premier Jyotirlinga.” Lord Shiva then told that, “You are first devotee that asked for such a good wish! You will now reside as a mountain known as Sriparvatam, Srinagam, Srisailam, and Shrigiri. My worshippers will walk through you while repeating their prayers, and you will be remembered.” This is how Lord Shiva manifested himself as Jyotirlinga in Srisailam.
