Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple is a Hindu temple in Guruvayur, Kerala, India, dedicated to the Hindu divinity Guruvayurappan (a four-armed manifestation of the Hindu god Vishnu). It is one of the most important places of worship for Hindus in Kerala, and is also known as Bhuloka Vaikunta, which translates to “Holy Abode of Vishnu on Earth.” The principal deity of the Guruvayur Temple is Vishnu, who is worshipped as Guruvayurappan. The primary image depicts a four-armed standing Krishna holding the conch Panchajanya, the discus Sudarshana Chakra, the mace Kaumodaki, and a lotus adorned with a Holy basil garland.
This piece of artwork depicts the beautiful form of Vishnu as it was revealed to Krishna’s parents Vasudeva and Devaki at the time that Krishna was being born. Because of this, Guruvayur is also known as the “Dwarka of South India.” He is worshipped now in accordance with Adi Shankara’s ceremonies, which were later formalised in the Tantric method by Cennas Narayanan Nambudiri. Tantra is an interreligious spiritual movement that developed in mediaeval India (born in 1427). The Cennas Nambudiris are the lineage of hereditary tantris at the Guruvayur Temple (high priests).
