An ancient Hindu temple in Srivilliputhur that is devoted to both Lord Vishnu and Andal, the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple dates back to the 12th century. It is situated at Srivilliputhur, which is around 80 km away from Madurai. This holy site is included among the 108 Divya Desams in India. The temple’s Gopuram is ranked as the fourth highest in the world.
This temple village is credited as being the only location in the world where two Azhwars are said to have originated. Periyalvar and Andal, Periyalvar’s foster daughter, are thought to have been born here. Periyalvar discovered Andal stowed away under the shade of a Tulsi plant inside the grounds of this temple’s garden.
As Andal got older, she assisted her grandfather, Periyalvar, in making a garland for the statue of Lord Vishnu. It was on one of these days that she first began wearing the garland for herself, and then later gave it to her father to use to decorate the god. Andal’s enthusiasm for the prospect of marrying Lord Vishnu grew with time. Periyalvar was unaware of any of this until he saw Andal wearing a garland around her neck that was meant for the Lord.

After some time had passed, it is thought that Andal merged with Lord Ranganatha at Srirangam after the couple had tied the knot there.
